Would you like to pursue a Master’s Degree or a PhD in a North American university? In this talk, we will discuss how the North American academic system works, how different it is from the Brazilian academic system, and what steps you should take to plan your studies abroad. In particular, we will explore what students need to apply for graduate school, and what they should (and shouldn’t) do to increase their chances of success. Our speaker is Dr. Guilherme D. Garcia, assistant professor of linguistics at Ball State University. Guilherme is originally from Rio Grande do Sul. He did his BA (2009) and MA (2012) at UFRGS before immigrating to Canada to pursue his PhD at McGill University (2017). While in Canada, Guilherme taught at McGill and Concordia University, and he was also a member of the Centre for Research on Brain, Language, and Music (CRBLM). His doctoral studies were funded by the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQSC). After finishing his PhD, he moved to the US to join the English Department at Ball State (2018). Guilherme has been awarded several fellowships and prizes, including a post-doctoral fellowship to pursue his studies at Harvard (which he declined to join Ball State). His research has appeared in Phonology, and has been presented at numerous international conferences in the field of linguistics (theoretical and experimental). In addition to describing his academic experience, Guilherme will also talk about the Master’s Degrees offered by his department, as well as funding opportunities at Ball State. At the end of the talk, we will have time for questions.
